be on the road

(I translated Korean to English with the help of AI.)

When you paint a landscape, you find yourself standing on the road within it. Every landscape is a road, a journey.

be on the road

I actually visit the places and translate those roads into my paintings. How can I capture the roads from someone's photos or videos as my own experience? I also try to experience those untraveled roads through my paintings. Sometimes, a foreign landscape I see for the first time in a photo feels like my own neighborhood in my painting.

The scenery of streetcars running is likely a popular subject for many painters. It's a rare sight in Korea, and it carries a certain romantic charm.

While the exotic scenery of streetcars is appealing, I can't resist the cozy warmth of familiar alleyway views. A photograph of an alleyway, taken by someone else, has found its way into my painting. It's a scene of an alley lined with old Korean traditional houses (Hanok). A motorcycle parked against a wall catches my eye, hinting at an imminent delivery. The telephone poles and intricate tangle of wires heighten the atmosphere. It's an alleyway where I'd love to linger for a while.
